Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one of the best games to land natively on Mac in years. Set in feudal Japan, it is a sprawling open-world action game developed by Ubisoft, and version 1.0.32 is its most polished state yet.
The Game
You play as two characters across the story. Naoe is a shinobi fast, quiet, and deadly in the shadows. Yasuke is a samurai slow, powerful, and devastating in open combat. Switching between them is not just a gimmick; each character genuinely changes how you approach missions, exploration, and fights. The world itself is beautiful, filled with snow-covered mountains, bamboo forests, busy port towns, and crumbling castles. Seasons change dynamically as you play, and the environment shifts with them.
What’s New in v1.0.32
This update opens up Bo staff weapons to all players. Previously tied to the Claws of Awaji expansion, Bo weapons now drop from enemies, appear in chests, and show up at merchants for everyone. The update also fixes a repetition issue in the Corrupted Castles system and improves how Daisho weapons are distributed. Several bugs have been squashed and general balance has been fine-tuned across the board.
Mac Performance
The game runs on Metal 3 with MetalFX upscaling built in. M3 and M4 chip users get full ray tracing and HDR support. On an M3 Max, expect around 30 FPS at 1440p on standard ray tracing settings. M1 and M2 users can still run it well with settings turned down. Overall, the Mac port is stable and well-optimized for Apple Silicon.
